The most common snake in North America is the garter (gardener) snake. This snake is also Massachusetts’s state reptile. The presence of Medusa on armor reinforces the idea that her presence held significant power to protect the wearer against enemies. Medusa remained a common theme in art in the nineteenth century, when her myth was retold in Thomas Bulfinch's Mythology.
