I appreciate that, because other survivor testimonies I’ve read stop shortly after liberation, but of course the trauma continues. Lily’s story is more than what happened to her and her family in the concentration camps — yes, she was in more than one. From there she and her sisters became slave labour in a munitions factory, and then faced a death march that they barely survived.

She is a founder member of the Holocaust Survivors Centre and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Holocaust education. I knew that place very well and the people who lived there… I realized what they had done to those families being their neighbours. Lily Ebert lives in London near her large and loving family, which includes thirty-four great-grandchildren. Lily is a treasure, and I just updated my review because I read that she is currently in the hospital.Lily and her sisters and some others whom they befriended essentially survived by having a mutual support network and being determined to stay together to maintain a small oasis of sanity amid the madness and horror. A Jewish-American soldier is one of her liberators, and he gives her a dollar bill on which he had written, “Good luck and happiness. I finally finish reading it today, it a hard read but necessary to make sure no one forget about what happen and how cruel some people can be. Lily lost so much, but she built a new life for herself and her family, first in Israel and then in London. Lily had promised herself that if she survived Auschwitz she would tell everyone the truth about the camp.

When we hear, view or read about the Holocaust, we rarely read what happened after the victims were rescued. Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and Dov, her great-grandson is a credit to her and an incredible young man. It showed furniture and books of jewish citizens of my german hometown just before they were burned on the marketplace in front of the townhall.

I discovered Lily and her great-grandson Dov on TikTok a few months ago and spend many many hours watching Lily talk and answer questions regarding the Holocaust. Apparently during the pandemic, a 96 year old Auschwitz surviver was tearing up TikTok with her great-great-grandson talking about her survival.

The beauty and optimism of Lily’s words are a light in a world that needs to hear her story now more than ever. The elder son was conscripted into a labour service, while Lily, her three sisters and younger brother, and their mother were sent to a ghetto and, along with the rest of the Jewish population of their town, kept in increasingly stringent conditions until they were deported to Auschwitz in early July. To tell her in person “Thank You for telling your story and you are precious and special to everyone who knows you.The backstory is a friend told me this book existed, but it wasn't being sold in the United States yet.

It also has chapters from Dov (her grandson) who helped lily in reaching out on social media to fill gaps in her story. An incredible, beautiful written page turner, I didn’t want the book to end- and not only because the story shows, photos which are interesting and was very suspense that keeps you riveted from the start to the end. And when her great-grandson, Dov, decided to use social media to track down the family of the GI, 96-year-old Lily found herself making headlines round the world. Príbeh sa rýchlo stal virálnym a Lily mala dokonca možnosť porozprávať sa s vojakovou rodinou cez Zoom.

The accuracy of dates and facts in her book about her time in the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau contributes to the chorus of voices thanks to which we can get closer to the human experience in a world of utter dehumanisation.
