When you said you felt so comfortable with me, it made me feel pathetic that I was feeling uncomfortable myself.

I think with this friend you thought you had a ‘special friendship’, which was why you tried to endure and continue. As she gradually worked through the therapy process, Baek learned how to avoid the emotional roller coaster that comes with dysthymia and how to avoid constantly judging herself and others. Baek Sehee’s I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki (review copy courtesy of Bloomsbury Australia) is a book written by a young woman struggling through life, caught in a cycle of ups, downs and mood swings. Complemented by an array of revealing personal photographs, the narrative alternates between heartfelt nostalgia about the seedier side of Manhattan’s go-go scene and funny quips about her unconventional stage performances. Throughout her account of this kooky, messed-up, enviable, and often thrilling life, her humility (her sons "are true miracles, considering the gene pool") never fails her.For those who may not relate at all, this book gives such beautiful and raw insight into how we think, what we think, and most of all, how much we are trying to be better for ourselves and for those around us.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of I WANT TO DIE BUT I WANT TO EAT TTEOKPOKKI by Baek Se-hee, a memoir/self-help book. I do hope that this is not what she actually said to the main character because I find the analysis hopelessly nonsensical. I WANT TO DIE BUT I WANT TO EAT TTEOKBOKKI has a fantastic, catchy title, which was what originally gravitated me towards this book.Sehee is honest and authentic throughout, beginning each chapter with a brief essay that introduces a topic she wants to discuss with the psychiatrist and concluding with an essay reflecting on what she learned from the session.

This text is essentially transcriptions of her conversations between her therapist and her, which range from a wide variety of topics. This book showed me how blurry the lines could be between mental health and personality / character, and emotional needs. But because that’s not a validation that I am able to accept, there’s a limit to how satisfying it can be, and I become bored of it. Frank and unapologetic, Johnson vividly captures aspects of her former life as a stage seductress shimmying to blues tracks during 18-minute sets or sewing lingerie for plus-sized dancers. When we're sinking in water, it can be a relief to feel the ground beneath our feet, the rock bottom, because we know we can kick against it to rise again.
