Working with designers and other creatives, the idea of a journal book is commonplace — but to my observations, they tend to be more about the reflections and notations on a project, rather than the bigger circulations about the nature of the doing of the work.

The first three sketches, including the one above, depict del Toro’s drawings for Pan’s Labyrinth. That got me thinking about the act of creativity, the progression of creative work — and the nature of inspiration. I was studying overviews on Steve Jobs, Apple strategy, some thinking about leadership and the reflection in consumer relationships and Apple marketing, but more particularly about the premise of the "design of leadership" -- or better still, leadership in design. The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking, new connections, and new industries. For one thing, the book gives us a guided tour of his home, a prop-filled fanboy funhouse that looks like something out of one of his moviesBut the meat of the book is culled from the notebooks Del Toro has been creating since his movie career began. Unlike Paul Thomas Anderson, with his infuriatingly perfect sense of visual balance, or Alfonso Cuarón, whose Oscar-sweeping Gravity required the invention of a novel, hyper-realisti c filming method, del Toro doesn’t deal with real life. For those interested in viewing more of del Toro’s wonderfully bizarre sketches, a somewhat larger gallery is available here. Some new sketches depicting "Pacific Rim" (sans the seizure-inducing special effects) have made their way to the internet, once again proving that del Toro is a visual artist to be reckoned with. He is best known for his films Blade II, the BAFTA award-winning and Oscarnominated Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy film franchise.

Guillermo del Toro, Author: Guillermo del Toro is the acclaimed director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak. It covers every film he's made since 2001, including his failed adaption of "At the Mountains of Madness". Dave McKean, his partner in an entire grouping of projects, mentions that he’s too busy to focus on his site. Even working with Tom Cruise, or director Tony Scott, JJ Abrams, David Fincher, I’ve often sorted through sketches of storyboards and related materials to finalize approaches for design. Inspired by the fabled journals in which acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro records his innermost thoughts and unleashes his vivid imagination, Insight Editions has created a replica sketchbook aimed at the director's legion of fans.I did have the chance to work with Tim Burton on Sleepy Hollow, for Paramount Studios — and during that time, the beginning and pre-production of that effort, I sorted through imagery from his projection of the visualization of the film — including, like Guillermo’s renderings of his imaginative creatures and productions — show the conceptions of set design and character. Similar in design to del Toro’s leather-bound volumes, this sketchbook features an inspirational message from the director along with selected examples of his incredible art before giving way to blank pages. I like to say that we only make one movie in our lifetime,” says Guillermo del Toro, “a movie made of all the images of all our movies. One particularly interesting inclusion in the batch of drawings are his conceptual ideas for an adaptation of H. I am very much looking forward to Guillermo del Toro's dark adult fairy tale, Pan's Labyrinth; I also deeply love looking at people's journals and sketchbooks.Inspired by the fabled journals in which acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro records his innermost thoughts and unleashes his vivid imagination, Insight Editions has created a replica sketchbook aimed at the directors legion of fans. Reporting on the current political climate is a responsibility we do not take lightly — and we need your help. The pages look a little like Leonardo da Vinci’s: fevered compositions of precise illustration and barely decipherable text, which testify both to Del Toro’s considerable drawing skills and his singular imagination. The director, who at the time wasn’t even sure he’d actually make “Pan’s Labyrinth,” took the cabbie’s act as a sign.
