Description

How Gobbolino finally did become a kitchen cat, and found the love he so desperately wanted, makes for a charming story. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. And in the end he is accepted - because he has been changed into something else and looks different. He has many adventures along the way and makes many friends, until he finally finds the home he dreams of.

Instead, he longs to be an ordinary kitchen cat that spends his time sitting by the fire and catching mice for his mistress. Alungat însă, pentru că nu seamănă cu ceilalți (are o lăbuță albă), tânjește după un cămin fericit, după mângâieri și compania oamenilor. She wrote and illustrated over sixty books for children with the most notable being Gobbolino the Witch's Cat and The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse. What made most of this story fun to read was the somewhere-inbetween-ness of Gobbolino, the kind-hearted witch's cat with blue eyes and one white paw. But Gobbolino is mistrusted wherever he goes, and blamed for myterious happenings such as the farmer's milk turning sour, and the orphanage children's gruel turning into chocolate! The world Gobbolino ventured into was not ready to accept him as who he was; in that world, he could either be a witch's cat, or a kitchen cat, not something in between. My feeling of dissatisfaction is probably more with the similarity between Gobbolino's world and the actual world we all live in, rather than the story that pointed to the similarity.

The story may be 75 years old now, but the style shouldn't put off readers/listeners, the language is readable and moves along nicely. I realise that the repetition of whole sentences reflects the style of old fairy tales, but it didn't make it any more interesting to read. His supernatural powers finally removed, Gobbolino finds himself reunited with the very family whose father wanted to drown him at the beginning of the book for being a witch's cat! He will find some people to live with, and all goes well, until they discover he is a witch's cat and will chase him out and on to the next chapter where the exact same thing will happen with some new people. In a series of adventures, our hero continually finds what appear to be ideal homes, only to be turned out again when his parentage is revealed, or the circumstances of his human companions change. His heritage gives almost everyone around him reason to move him on, and his life becomes one adventure after another as yet another home becomes unwelcoming and rebuffs the kitten. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. The pedlar-woman leaves him in the care of his sister, Sootica, and her mistress, but once again he is unable to complete his tasks.

One hardly expects most children's books written for this age level to grapple with such weighty issues, but Ursula Moray Williams's book does just that. Gobbolino is such a cute little thing that every setback in his adventure to find a kitchen was really sad and you wished him all the best. While his sister Sootica learns how to ride a broomstick and turn mice into toads, Gobbolino sets out to find a family to care for him and a home of his own. As well as writing, she became involved in local life around the village of Beckford, where she and her family lived, organizing children's parties, and serving as a magistrate.
