But despite working in the same club and sharing a flat, they couldn't be more different: Tiggy speaks posh and receives a cheque from her father every month, believes in love, wants nothing but to be loved, can't stop grieving for her mother who left the family when Tiggy was fourteen and is waiting for her older, married lover (who used to be her teacher in a boarding school) to leave his wife. Waking up 117 years later, Bob discovers his mind has been uploaded into a sentient space probe with the ability to replicate itself. Summary: A psychological character study cum sex-industry thriller, this novel defies genre classifications but it's an enjoyable, fast paced book that shows skill, passion and promise.

I still plan to read the PRETTY LITTLE LIARS series, but I'm not sure I'd attempt another of Shepard's adult novels.

Sauma’s new novel, by contrast, is set in the near future, in a world parallel to our own, where charismatic CEO and modern-day pied piper Norman Best offered a select few millennials an escape from their angst-ridden ruts via a wormhole in the Pacific Ocean. Starting reading this book on holiday, as I really like the author so thought I’m sure I’ll like this one. Sauma skewers the falsities and disappointments of contemporary life and work with rare sensitivity, unfolding an evocative narrative of unearthly escape. Every now and then, a book comes along and pins down the wild thoughts that have been circling around in your brain as you question the meaning of your life in the bath at midnight. For disregarding the pseudo-science that bogs down and overcomplicates so much modern sci-fi with needless tedium.

SPOLIER* the epilogue, where we finally get to know Scott was by far the most interesting part of the story, and it came far too late.

With all these horrors mounting ever-higher, to what source of comfort or relief can we turn to to help us endure all the anxiety and inconvenience of our "new" daily lives? Having finished the book in a mere two days, and as a self-obsessed lover of the dystopian genre, I was more than ready to discuss it here. The ending left you with the impression that all works out, but I would have liked that extra chapter; I am a closer.
