In the end, the weaknesses in Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy only really become apparent after nearly a dozen playthroughs.

fi, Maldito Games, Matagot, MeepleBR, Pegasus Spiele, sternenschimmermeer, Surfin' Meeple China, TLAMA games, uplay. I also have Twilight Imperium which is the most compared with this one and I vastly prefer Eclipse over that. And perhaps most impressive is the gigantic galactic center defense system miniature that sits at the core of the galaxy as an imposing, threatening warning to anyone who dares try to cut through the galaxy’s core for a direct route towards an opponent. Some of these tiles also have some SUPER ELITE upgrades on them that you can ONLY find on these tiles. Each time we’ve played, at least one of us (usually me) has been wiped out in combat because we got overconfident in taking them on unprepared. There are actual, practical differences between these civilizations as they are designed – which is why it’s disappointing that actually playing them feels so homogenized. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Going into combat has many variables to take into account and isn’t just focused around your numbers. Will, thanks for this thoughtful review, and briefly comparing Eclipse 2nd Dawn with its more established cousin, Twilight Imperium. If you choose to keep it then you place it down next to a tile that you control aligning the little wormhole icons on the tiles so they match up. Other than that though there really isn’t any other interaction, it’s mostly done indirectly by grabbing up those juicy tech tiles first or placing exploration tiles down in a particular fashion to block off other players. The third player might build a group of mid-sized cruisers that have incredibly strong hulls, which means they survive long enough for their ion cannons to poke a fatal number of holes in their opponents…you get the idea! I love complex games, but I know not everyone can get into them, however once you explain a few of the game concepts Eclipse Second Dawn is actually shocking easy to learn and play!

In a game with as many moving parts as Eclipse, managing shifting piles of resource pieces would be a nightmare. These are important as they will increase the amount of tech, money and build points you will generate every round. Your shipment will include a packaging list which will be your receipt and act as possible proof of warranty. In nearly every game I have played, I’ve watched at least one player commit heavily to combat in the mid-early turns of the game, whiff a few crucial dice rolls, and watch their entire fleet they spent three rounds building up get absolutely demolished.Colonising a sector also involves placing one of your influence discs on it, contributing to how expensive your civilisation will be.

I love the layout as well, with sidebars explaining the actions and the middle of the pages showing picture examples.

The game currently has three expansions – Rise of the Ancients, released in 2012, Ship Pack One, released in 2013 and Shadow of the Rift, released in 2015 – and four mini expansions. But, thanks to lockdown restrictions, I’ve found it to be a quite brilliant two player economic game.
