Though Clodagh isn't gifted as a seer or with magical abilities, she is perceptive to the Otherworldly beings that share the forest around her home, sometimes seeing things others can't. If you haven’t visited Mayri before I heartily recommend you do so, she’s a wonderful blogger and I loved our buddy read, so much so in fact we are already planning our next book. What was meant to be a peaceful visit is quickly transformed as a shipwreck on a nearby reef sends three survivors to the island, including a mysterious amnesiac who Sibeal finds herself caring for. Liam stays with Sorcha in Sevenwaters, and Finbar disappears in the waters, leaving only a feather behind.

Lady Oonagh effectively takes over his mind, but when his children disappear he is so shaken by loss that he regains some of his freedom.

Marillier spends most of the first half creating distinct characters for each of the six brothers the heroine Sorcha must save.

That bittersweet part in between struck a chord with me and was one of my favorite bits of the book. And then Red goes and proves her right by not accepting the magic that happened right in front of his eyes. For me, I couldn’t help wondering why Finbar couldn’t have just encouraged Sorcha to leave the cave – but maybe he isn’t allowed to interfere in the trials she faces? Everywhere he went, from hall to courtyard, from sleeping quarters to stables, his two great wolfhounds padded silently behind him.

For an Irish resident, familiar with the mores and customs, Daughter of the Forest had special meaning and relevance. She is shown to be kind and has a mind of her own—befriending Sorcha even though the others shun her. But Sorcha’s joy is shattered when her father is bewitched by his new wife, an evil enchantress who binds her brothers with a terrible spell, a spell which only Sorcha can lift – by staying silent.

Just the threat of being found would have been enough, to my mind, to have her want to move on when the Lady of the Forest says to. In litera-chah, heroes are supposed to have depth of character, complex psychology, and tragic flaws. Frustrated in her attempts to destroy the family, Oonagh binds the brothers with a spell only Sorcha can lift.

But magic knows no boundaries, and Sorcha will have to choose between the life she has always known and a love that comes only once. A retelling of the fairy tale The Six Swans (alternatively known as The Twelve Brothers or other titles), Daughter of the Forest follows Sorcha and her six brothers.

It definitely could’ve been evened out more, as there is a sex scene that’s touched upon, but nowhere near as graphic as the r*pe scene. Heir to Sevenwaters" is the story of Clodagh ( Klo-da), daughter of Sean and Aisling ( Ash-ling), an obedient, selfless, and caring young woman. Yet, Marillier also never falls into the trap of simply giving the brothers one character trait apiece and letting it go at that, Cormack the warrior loves his dog, Conor, scholar and druid in training also has an oddly harsh streak and so on. One of Red's closest friend and advisers, he is more withdrawn and quieter than Ben, but just as protective of Sorcha, especially after she saves his wife's life. Set in the Celtic twilight of ancient Ireland, when myth was law and magic a force of nature, this is the tale of Sorcha, seventh child of a seventh son, the forbidding Lord Colum, and of her six beloved brothers.

Seer of Sevenwaters follows Sibeal's (pronounced Shi-bail) last summer on Inis Eala before she makes her final vows to become a druid and live in the forest of Sevenwaters in quiet meditation and solitude.
