Part of these, Gokane Rock, dries to 6 metres and the area should not be approached within a distance of 200 metres. Many of its early inhabitants were in the business of supplying the ships as they sheltered in Crookhaven after or before a long voyage. The road goes to the east of the beach across a causeway bisecting Lissagriffin Lakes and at the t -junction you turn left to Mizen Head.

Although the harbour dries at low tide, giving great feeding for a variety of wildlife including fox, heron and pheasant, there is a deepwater quay at the entrance to accommodate fishing boats and yachts. Prior to this, the road which had been built by Richard Griffith, civil engineer for Munster, extended as far as Rock Island, and passage from there to Crookhaven itself could only be made by water. The Mizen Peninsula, at Ireland's most southwesterly point, is worldwide renown for the beauty of its rugged landscape and ancient heritage.

Crookhaven village stands on the south side of the harbour, approximately one mile from the entrance.

The view when you approach the castle on the road is amazing, but those from the top floor as you look out over the bay are truly spectacular. Today they have been partially eroded but they are protected like much of the coast round this area as European designated Special Areas of Conservation.
