Description

Three of the finest novels of the 19th Century are brought together in this wide-ranging collection. This is a re-release in series binding of the larger-size 1886 edition which was bound in blue cloth. Curators (Nicolas Bourriaud and Vincent Honoré) have chosen to explore the first decade of the 21 stcentury through the collection, paralleling world and cultural events with works from the collection, choosing a few for each year of the decade. The dining table extends from 140cm to 180cm with a beautifully designed butterfly leaf that sits underneath the table top.

Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Louisa May Alcott… Timeless Classics offers you a superb selection of novels that revolutionised the female universe.LARRY’S LIST is honoured to have a conversation with Muriel and Freddy Salem about their considerations around a purchase; how the townhouse was renovated to better facilitate the display of artworks; why it is important for them to open their collection to the public and to initiate public programs; as well as the upcoming exhibition of their art collection in Montpellier, France. The British artists Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Rachel Whiteread or Rebecca Warren and the Germans Sigmar Polke, Franz West, Martin Kippenberger or Rosemarie Trockel are some of the artists confronted in a dynamic installation that seeks to highlight how these creators have revitalised and reinvented the traditional art mediums of painting and sculpture. A timeline will chart the key events of this period and connect them to paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and videos from this prestigious collection. These are listed as uncommon or rare below depending how regularly they show up on the market, even though there is likely to have been a similar number of copies published for some of the volumes. The bindings, made of smooth shiny cloth, boast a uniform dark shade of green that contributes to the series’ cohesive visual identity.

Rather than being named after its first volume, Old Christmas , or the first designer (Randolph Caldecott illustrated the first two titles), the series derives its moniker from the fourth volume released, Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell, which was published in 1891 and illustrated by Hugh Thomson. ItÆs August 1844 and one year since the small Cheshire market town celebrated the marriage of Sophy Hutton to Dr Harrison and Miss Matty lost her beloved sister, Deborah .

Three Gaskell novels have been woven together to create this uniquely rich and comic drama about ordinary human lives during one extraordinary year. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). Following the release of six additional volumes in 1892, all including the name “Cranford” in Macmillan’s advertising material, the collection was retrospectively named the Cranford Series, encompassing the earlier three volumes as well.
