Indeed, Tinseltown aficionados and fans of the likes of James Ellroy and Raymond Chandler will devour The Devil’s Playground, as will any reader who appreciates a tightly plotted, propulsive story filled with multilayered characters. The slenderness of her neck is emphasized by an ornate gold-and-jewel collar that completely encircles her throat, from under her chin to where it fans out over her chest and shoulders as an Usekh necklace. Craig Russell’s The Devil’s Playground is a lavish production of the golden age of Hollywood… Deliciously, the cool, hard-bitten tone of Mary’s chapters is in lockstep with that of a classic noir. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. He offers a complex cast and brilliantly weaves their backstories throughout the book as he takes the reader back and forth in time.

The type of man who glides through life, charming and beguiling his way because nature accidentally gave his features particular proportions and a certain symmetry. She gives a small, tense nod, her resolve not to cry a fragile dam straining against the weight of shock and grief. After the water in the lake dried up, so did tourism and the cashflow, leading its destitute owner to kill himself and his family in a horrific murder-suicide. The characters are well drawn, the era is well evoked, and there's more than enough intrigue to keep the reader guessing.

FROM CWA DAGGER AND DOUBLE McILVANNEY AWARD WINNER CRAIG RUSSELL COMES ANOTHER DARK, GRIPPING MASTERPIECE . Come on, I’ve set everything up in the parlor,” she says, turning once more from him and leading the way across the lobby. Craig Russell's novels have been published in twenty-five languages, four have been made into major films in Germany, in one of which he has a cameo role as a detective. And yet, I say that, but perhaps there is something about the way in which the Hollywood elite lived, that sense of entitlement which comes through in the text, that made certain revelations far less shocking and almost gave them an air of inevitability.

There's a huge denouement, fantastic and horrible, which makes a good case why "The Devil's Playground" should never be seen. Her current mess is the death of Playground’s star, Norma Carlton, a murder made to look like a suicide. Her hair is bright white against the dark tan of her face, but he realizes that, were she to dye it, she could pass for a woman twenty years her junior. The architectural vernacular is a mix of Spanish Colonial Revival grandness and poured-concrete amenity. Why did the witch, supposedly haven convinced everyone of her death by suicide, make one female fixer believe she died by murder thus starting an investigation? Readers may feel a voyeuristic thrill as the names of Hollywood royalty — Clara Bow, John Barrymore, and Mary Pickford, among others — are dropped into scenes. This is a terrific blend of historical fiction, with its depiction of classic Hollywood, and chilling supernatural elements. One of the most creative twist endings I have experienced in ages… The Devil’s Playground might just be the best mystery of the year.
