At the start you're like "oh no, they're those types of parents" but as the book goes on you see that they're also not who they seem. By writing her fears (as well as embarrassing and cringeworthy truths) on paper, she never has to face them in real life. I loved the writing an thought that Goffney really captures the Black Baptist church in all it's glory, warts and all. There was so much he taught her and so much you could tell she simple learned from being around him and Sasha.

The love triangle aspect was interesting but I have to say, the contrast between Monique’s ex-boyfriend Dom and Reggie was a really interesting one and proves that people’s perceptions of others aren’t always accurate. Maybe it's not the choice I would've taken, but it felt true to Monique's character arc and that particular family. Seventeen-year-old Charlie Davis, a white girl living on the margins, thinks she has little reason to live: her father drowned himself; her bereft and abusive mother kicked her out; her best friend, Ellis, is nearly brain dead after cutting too deeply; and she's gone through unspeakable experiences living on the street. Growing up as a black woman in a religious household, I could relate to a lot of what was written, but to be honest, no matter what your background, this book can be relatable. This is a beautifully crafted and compelling story that I know will be invaluable to many readers who might—like Monique—might not have access to sexual health services or information. She later finds out that she has vaginismus, and the book sort of becomes an almost fetch quest as she, and two unexpected allies-- sycophantic good girl Sasha and bad boy Reggie-- try to help her "cure" her problem by plying her with erotica, vaginal dilators, and constant instruction on how to train herself. I’ve gushed in her inbox so many times about this book that she’s probably sick of me but thank you so much for such an important book.

Like most issue books, this is not an easy read, but it's poignant and transcendent as Charlie breaks more and more before piecing herself back together. Luckily, in this day and age, it seems like parenting styles and methods are evolving and I'm very grateful for that. Along her unorthodox healing journey, Monique makes some surprising discoveries about her family and, more importantly, about herself. A triumph in not just dynamite contemporary fiction but also in critiquing purity culture and the harm it can do. Can you imagine being a 12 year old and hearing from the pulpit every Sunday how if you have sex before marriage it means you have less value in the eyes of God?And I think it’s so important as I truly believe forgiveness and love are two core principles of Christianity. Thanks to Goffney’s superb storytelling and dazzling prose, this candid exploration of a sensitive subject is also a heartfelt, funny, and irresistible read. I read CONFESSIONS OF AN ALLEGED GOOD GIRL hot on the heels of Lara Parker's VAGINA PROBLEMS, which is a memoir about living with the chronic pain and sexual difficulties of living with endometriosis, which also involves painful sex. Vaginismus – is the body’s automatic reaction to the fear of some or all types of vaginal penetration.
