pages, superb colour plates, black and gilt decorated plum cloth binding, the book is in very good condition with some minor spine creasing. He knows things about Patrick's life and the Ashbys that only Patrick could have known, and he is the exact image of Patrick. Hers centered around the main character in Charles Kingsley's Hereward the Wake, and the adventures she imagined herself having by Hereward's side (oblivious to his neglected wife)! Brat Farrar has no knowledge of the Ashbys, a family of English landed gentry, although he is about to get to know them very well.

Frankly I did not think I was going to be gripped by this story but I was intrigued because I had enjoyed The Franchise Affair so much.

New Paperbacks NEW PAPERBACKS [jsb_filter_by_tags count="15" show_more="10" sort_by="total_products"/] A selection of recent paperbacks. Even when the Ashby family is engaged in horse shows or other apparently innocuous pursuits, there's an ominous atmosphere, a feeling that disaster could strike at any time. Where I started skimming was at a race or showjumping or something, where there are pages and pages and pages of descriptions of horses and their style and pedigree and all sorts. He is persuaded to impersonate Patrick Ashby, the elder twin of Simon Ashby, who was thought to have committed suicide eight years previously, and whose body was never found.

I’ve not yet read this one, but after reading your glowing review I’ll have to dig it out and add it to the TBR pile! In fact, for me the precariousness of the situation adds tension and, although the ending was not a huge surprise, the way all the loose ends are tied up is very satisfying. Miss Lucy Pym, expert psychologist, is flattered to be invited to lecture there - even if the Olympian splendour of the students leaves her feeling just a little inadequate. It suffers from comparison with du Maurier’s The Scapegoat, which is better in many ways but particularly the feeling that everything could crumble at any point.Brat Farrar was published by the Folio Society in 2010, so this is the most recent book I've looked at. Loading is a B-movie actor figure and a scam artist who has known the Ashby’s very well for a long time. He would like to see the place too: this Latchetts, where his twin had grown up in belonging quiet while he had bucketed round the world, all the way from the orphanage to that moment in a London street, belonging nowhere.
