Every cross-training shoe featured in this article has been personally reviewed by me and tested in a similar format. By testing models in a similar format, I can then draw more context between shoes and where they’ll be the most appropriate. For flat feet, this model may also work well for your needs. There’s not a ton of arch in this shoe so it shouldn’t feel super offputting through the midfoot if you typically like flatter training shoes. When it comes to running, you can expect a similar performance from all three of these shoes. The core components that can influence a shoe’s running performance like midsole, outsole, and heel-to-toe drop all run consistently on these models. This shoe features a dual-density midsole that gives you more flexibility in the forefoot and stability in the heel. The blend of these two densities gives this model a stable feel in different exercises when under different loads. Below, I’ve included a table of consistent test I (we) do on all of our cross training shoes. As of right now, I’ve performed all of these, and I’m still putting these shoes to the test. Since they’re a newer model, and a first model at that, it’s tough to say how these shoes will hold up in regards to gym performance in a year from now, although, I have some starting thoughts below. Movement Test

To break down the performance differences between the UA TriBase Reign 5 and Reebok Nano X3, I’ll cover how these perform in a wide range of contexts. I’ll discuss their performance for lifting, CrossFit, versatile training, short runs, and daily wear. The Reebok Nano X3 comes with a Flexweave upper that extends from the forefoot to the midfoot. The boot is enclosed with the TPU from the Lift and Run chassis system and it has a fair amount of structure and padding to it. The chassis system injects in the medial and lateral midfoot as well. Laces and Tongue This shoe’s Micro G Foam midsole takes a bit to break in and even when broken in, they’re not the most articulative training shoes on the market regarding their ability to flex and twist and promote foot connection with the ground. If you found the TriBase Reign 4 to run a little too narrow for your feet, then I would not expect the 5 to feel any better and I’d suggest passing on this iteration. Performance for Lifting, CrossFit, and VersatilityThe Reebok Nano X2 TR Adventure is our top Crossfit shoe for taking on workouts outside as we found out it has excellent durability and traction to handle all the outdoor action, while still being a superbly stable gym shoe. This shoe’s Micro G Foam midsole is stable enough to support 400 lb squats and 500 lb deadlifts and its TriBase outsole has a nice level of tread for lifting on different surfaces. If you’re only planning to lift in the TriBase Reign 5, then I think you’ll enjoy this shoe.

But heavy lifts are where the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 really comes alive and you will most appreciate the shoe. It feels like every aspect of the shoe really comes together in perfect harmony at the bottom of your heavy squats. It’s important to note that some cross-training shoes will ebb and flow in regard to their specialties. For example, some shoes will be on the more stable end of the spectrum while others will provide more versatility. 2. Firmer Midsoles and Outsoles We dissected this shoe in the lab and placed its upper material on top of a light source. The moment the light shone from below it, we saw gigantic ventilation holes, perfectly explaining the immense amount of breathability that we enjoyed. Hands down, the Nano 2.0 is a perfect 5 for ventilation. Currently, Under Armour makes a wide variety of shoes designed for different sports, but they have yet to create a cross training shoe specifically made for functional fitness athletes/CrossFit athletes. The UATriBase™ Reign has a release date of December 26th 2018, and we’ve pushing their capabilities over the last two weeks. I’ve reviewed the market’s best cross training shoes, so it was really interesting comparing this shoe’s performance to models that have fourth (Metcon) and eighth (Nanos) iterations released. The Reign 4 and 5 are once again identical in this construction feature and you can expect similar versatility and stability from them. The Reign Vital’s midsole is primarily different due to its foam heel mold which gives it a clunkier look. Upper On the mid-foot, there are technically six eyelets that run up the mid-foot of the shoe. The eyelets of this model are very different from other cross training shoes. The bottom and top eyelets have an area where the lace enters and exits twice in the shoe, while the middle two are constructed with about a centimeter of loop material. This material on the middle two eyelets extends underneath the outer construction and connect to the base of the shoe, which was a cool sign for stability purposes. UA TriBase Reign Eyelets
